GROUND BASE LiDAR SURVEY TECHNIQUE



Soilwater have developed and successfully tested a new survey technique which uses ground‐based LiDAR to assess erosion and surface instability. Using this technique, quantifiable and objective data on stability can rapidly and routinely be captured to definitively prove that a post‐mine landform is stable, and to allow regulators to approve closure and relinquishment.

Soilwater Team Joins the 2018 Oxfam Trailwaker Event

 Soilwater has entered a team of four in the 2018 Oxfam Trailwalker event to be held in October. Yes, we may be quite insane, but at least it’s for a very good cause.


We will be walking 100km, through the Perth hills over a weekend to raise money for some of the great Oxfam projects that aim to reduce global poverty. They do some really cool stuff, here’s a link if you are curious.

So this is a blatant appeal for cash. If you are able to spare a few dollars, we would really appreciate the support. This is also a good time to donate given it’s the end of the Financial Year, and you can claim the deduction in your tax returns!

Deep soil trenching and investigation at the Cooljarloo Minesite, north of Perth.

Rehabilitation Modelling and Monitoring

Soilwater Consultants (SWC) have been engaged by Tronox to commence Rehabilitation Modelling and Monitoring at the Cooljarloo Minesite. This work will involve unsaturated zone hydraulic modelling of various rehabilitation cover systems using HYDRUS 2D/3D and geochemical modelling of underlying Potential Acid Forming (PAF) fines materials using the PYROX geochemical model.  


The results of this work will determine the sustainability of current rehabilitation practices and establish the potential environmental impacts of PAF materials used in the backfilling of mining voids.  The model results will be validated by installing a range of soil moisture probes and soil solution samplers within the cover system to confirm the predictions.

New Screening Testing Package for Risk Assessment

Soilwater Analysis (SWA) are pleased to announce a new screen testing package that can be used to assess the risks of so-called problematic materials on rehabilitation and the surrounding environment.  The new screen testing package involves measuring pH, electrical conductivity (EC), pHox (oxidisable pH) and Emerson Class on soil or drill samples, or laboratory pulps that are typically collected during exploration or resource drilling.  


The results from this screen testing tells you 1) the geochemical risk of the materials to be mined (i.e. whether previous oxidation of sulphides has occurred and if there any residual sulphides in the material) and 2) the risks to future rehabilitation (i.e. the salinity and erodibility of the material and thus its suitability as a growth medium and rehabilitation resource). 


The new screen testing package is rapid and inexpensive and thus can be completed on a large number of samples to capture any geological heterogeneity; thus improving the reliability of the risk assessment.

Organic Carbon Analysis and Microbial Biomass Carbon

Soilwater Analysis (SWA) are pleased to announce that we have expanded our laboratory capabilities to include Organic Carbon (Org. C) and Microbial Biomass Carbon (MBC) analysis. Organic Carbon analysis is undertaken using the standard Walkley and Black (W & B) Method, whilst MBC is undertaken using the fumigation-extraction method. 


An understanding of soil Org. C and MBC is an important aspect for assessing soil chemical fertility and in determining carbon sequestration performance, which is essential for participation in any carbon trading scheme.

UWA Intern Rose Faragher

The Soilwater Group are pleased to announce the commencement of a UWA Internship in Land and Water Management. Rose Faragher is currently enrolled in a Master of Environmental Science at UWA and as part of this course she will be completing a 12 week industry practical. The Soilwater Group are pleased to support this important program, which helps train our future environmental practitioners, and welcome to the team Rose!

R & D Projects

Soilwater Technologies (SWT) are currently undertaking a range of R & D Projects that will have important implications to land and mine rehabilitation management. Relevant projects include: 

  • Use of Ground-Based LiDAR for routine assessment of erosion processes and landform stability. 
  • Development of pedotransfer functions to assist in predicting land and mine rehabilitation performance and surrogate growth medium materials. 
  • Development of a screen testing procedure for assessing both geochemical and rehabilitation risks from mining. 
  • Development of a fully-autonomous soil moisture probe controlled irrigation system.
